For a small town in the Northwoods, Eagle River keeps a surprisingly full calendar. There's a marquee event in nearly every season — plus the farmers markets, fish fries and fireworks that make an ordinary week up here feel like a holiday. Here's what's on through the year, and how we'd plan a trip around it.
At a glance
What are the biggest events?
If you're picking your dates around a single event, these are the four we hear about most. Each is a long-running tradition, so the season is a safe bet even when the exact dates shift a little year to year.
Snowmobile Derby Jan
The World Championship Snowmobile Derby roars into town every January — Eagle River is the Snowmobile Capital of the World, after all.
Klondike Days Feb
A late-winter celebration of Northwoods heritage: sled-dog races, working draft horses, and old-time logging demonstrations.
Fourth of July Summer
A small-town parade by day and fireworks over the water by night — the Northwoods summer at its most classic.
Cranberry Fest Oct
One of Wisconsin's biggest fall festivals, with a huge craft fair and cranberries in every form, right at harvest time.
Winter
What's happening in winter?
Winter might be Eagle River's loudest season. The World Championship Snowmobile Derby each January is the headliner — racers and fans pour in from all over for the ice-track action, and the whole town leans into its Snowmobile Capital of the World title. New to sledding? Our first-timer's guide to snowmobiling covers the trails and rentals. A few weeks later, Klondike Days brings sled-dog teams, draft horses and logging-camp demonstrations to the fairgrounds. Add ice-fishing outings and miles of groomed trail, and the cold months stay plenty busy.
Spring
Is spring worth the trip?
Spring is the Northwoods' quiet exhale. The big festivals pause, the snow gives way to ice-out, and the lakes wake back up — which is exactly why some folks love it. The Wisconsin fishing opener in early May is the season's real event, the farmers market returns as things warm, and the woods green up fast. If you'd rather have the water and trails mostly to yourself, this is your window.
Summer
What about summer?
Summer is peak season, and the calendar shows it. Fourth of July brings a hometown parade and fireworks over the lake. Through the warm months you'll find weekly farmers markets, arts-and-crafts fairs, live music in the park, and fishing tournaments out on the chain. Late summer brings the Vilas County Fair, one of the oldest in the state. For the lay of the land between events, our Eagle River area guide points you to the beaches, trails and ice-cream stops worth building a day around.
Fall
And in the fall?
Fall may be the best-value season of all. Cranberry Fest takes over downtown each October — a sprawling craft fair, marsh tours, and cranberries turned into everything from brats to fudge, all celebrating the harvest that Wisconsin leads the country in. It lines up beautifully with peak color, so pair it with our Northwoods fall-color guide for where to catch the leaves while you're here.
Where to stay for the big weekends
Event weekends — the Derby and Cranberry Fest especially — fill the Northwoods early, so book ahead. Both of our cabins are open year-round: The O.G. on Lake Arbutus and The Grandy Dandy on the Sugar Camp Chain, each with kayaks, a hot tub, and the lake right out the door.
