The Northwoods, at your door

Everything we'd tell a first-time visitor about Eagle River — by season, on the water, and off it.

Eagle River sits in the heart of Wisconsin's Northwoods — a small Vilas County town wrapped in pine forest and water, where you're never far from a lake, a trail, or a supper club. Both of our cabins are 10 to 15 minutes from downtown, so everything below is an easy drive.

This is the guide we'd hand a friend who'd never been up north. Vilas County alone holds more than 1,300 lakes, and the town packs a genuine claim to fame into its small footprint. Here's how we'd spend a few days, by season and by interest.

Plan by season

A town for every season

Summer

Prime lake time. Swim, paddle, fish, and boat; chase a Friday fish fry; catch the sunset from the dock. Long days and warm water are what the Northwoods summer is all about.

Fall

Arguably the best-kept secret. The hardwoods turn gold and crimson, the crowds thin, the fishing stays strong, and a hot tub under the pines feels just right on a cool evening.

Winter

Eagle River's headline season — snowmobiling, ice fishing, and cross-country skiing, capped by the World Championship Snowmobile Derby each January.

Spring

Quiet and uncrowded, with the Wisconsin fishing opener drawing anglers north. A peaceful time to have the lake mostly to yourself.

On the water

The world's largest chain of lakes

The Eagle River area anchors the Eagle River–Three Lakes Chain — 28 connected lakes that together form the largest inland chain of freshwater lakes in the world, and one of Wisconsin's most celebrated musky fisheries. You can spend a day hopping from lake to lake by boat without ever loading a trailer.

Our two cabins sit on their own quieter waters — The O.G. on private, no-wake Lake Arbutus, and The Grandy Dandy on the boatable Sugar Camp Chain. For species, launches, and the gear we provide, see our fishing guide.

Trails & outdoors

Snowmobile Capital of the World

Eagle River is the officially recognized Snowmobile Capital of the World, home to the World Championship Snowmobile Derby held every January for more than 60 years — often called the “Indy 500 of snowmobile racing,” drawing tens of thousands of fans to the banked ice oval downtown. Year-round you can dig into the history at the World Snowmobile Headquarters museum.

When the snow flies, the region opens up more than 500 miles of professionally groomed snowmobile trails, with ATV and UTV routes too. For trail maps and conditions, the Vilas County and Oneida County websites are the best sources, and the Wisconsin DNR covers state snowmobile and trail regulations.
